There is no universal winner. Each method answers a different version of the same question:
Did the ball—or the putter—pass through the corridor I created on this setup?
A pass is useful feedback. It is not a diagnosis of your face angle, path, contact, posture, vision, or ability to putt on a breaking green.
Who this is for
This comparison is for a recreational golfer choosing a simple start-line feedback method and deciding whether a household setup is enough. It compares measurement logic and blind spots; it does not rank or recommend products.

First, record the geometry
The USGA's equipment rules say a conforming golf ball must not be less than 1.680 inches (42.67 mm) in diameter. That is a minimum ball specification, not a recommended practice-gate width.
For your own setup, measure the actual ball and the clear opening. If the ball is centered, the nominal clearance on each side is:
(gate opening − measured ball diameter) ÷ 2
Example: if your measured opening is 2.00 inches and your measured ball is 1.68 inches, the centered nominal clearance is 0.16 inches per side. That arithmetic does not account for marker shape, ball wobble, surface irregularity, viewing error, or misalignment. It is not a universal difficulty score.
Also record:
- distance from ball to gate or checkpoint;
- gate opening or ruler width;
- surface and direction;
- target line and how it was aligned;
- whether the aid guides the ball, the putter, or only your view;
- whether the result will be retested without the aid.
Without those details, two “gate drill” scores may describe different tasks.
Method 1: a ruler or straight narrow strip
What it shows
If a ball stays on the ruler or strip, it remained within that narrow surface for the observed distance. If it leaves early, you have visible feedback about the ball's path relative to the ruler.
What else affects the result
- whether the ruler is straight and flat;
- whether it rocks, bows, or slopes;
- edge height and shape;
- the ball start position;
- alignment to the intended target;
- the transition from ruler to floor;
- ball launch, skid, roll, and surface contact.
What it cannot diagnose
It cannot tell you that a particular body movement, grip, face angle, path, or impact point caused the departure. A study of elite golfers found face angle was the largest modeled contributor to direction consistency among measured stroke variables, but that does not turn a household ruler into an impact-measurement device—especially for a different skill level and setup.
Practical limit
A ruler is a highly constrained, local task. Retest a small block from the same start point after removing it. If the result disappears, record aid dependence rather than claiming the skill transferred.
Method 2: coins or other flat markers
What they show
Two flat markers can create an early ball corridor. A second pair can define a stopping zone. The markers do not need to touch the ball for the corridor to be visible.
That makes them useful for separating:
- early start-line result: left, passed, right, or unclear;
- local pace result: short, in zone, beyond, or unclear.
What else affects the result
Marker diameter, thickness, reflectivity, contrast, alignment, distance from the ball, and surface movement all change the task. A ball contacting a coin may deflect; what happens after contact should not be scored as an ordinary finish.
What they cannot diagnose
A pass at one checkpoint does not prove the complete roll stayed on line, and a miss does not reveal a mechanical cause. Flat markers also do not measure whether the surface itself is level or consistent.
Practical limit
Loose coins can scratch a floor, move on impact, or become a hazard in a shared space. Use stable, visible markers that are suitable for the surface and remove them after practice.
Method 3: tees
What they show
Tees can create two different tasks on a suitable turf surface or mat:
- ball gate: the ball passes between tees placed ahead of it;
- putter gate: the putter head moves between tees placed around it.
Contact provides obvious feedback, which can make the result easy to record.
The critical distinction
Clearing a putter gate means the putter head did not touch those boundaries during that portion of the motion. It does not automatically mean the ball started on the intended line. Clearing a ball gate means the ball passed that corridor; it does not describe the complete putter motion.
What tees cannot diagnose
Neither task identifies the cause of contact or miss. Gate position, spacing, angle, tee flexibility, surface anchoring, and golfer alignment all matter.
Practical limit
Do not push tees into wood, tile, household carpet, or another surface that may be punctured or damaged. If tees cannot be anchored safely and repeatably, choose flat markers instead.
Method 4: a purpose-built putting gate
What it shows
A gate can offer a measured, repeatable opening for the ball or putter, depending on the design. Some designs may be easier to align, adjust, or store than improvised markers.
Those are product-specification questions. GolfGNG has not tested them here.
What else affects the result
- actual opening and adjustment accuracy;
- base thickness and stability;
- alignment method;
- surface compatibility;
- whether contact moves the gate;
- whether rails, walls, magnets, or visual features guide the task;
- storage and setup repeatability.
What it cannot diagnose
A gate cannot by itself separate face angle, path, impact point, aim, setup, vision, or surface influence. It also cannot prove retention after removal or transfer to a real green.
Practical limit
Do not treat a tighter opening as automatically better. Difficulty must remain high enough to provide interpretable attempts rather than constant contact, compensation, or abandonment. Golf research does not establish one universal gate width or progression for every golfer.
Use an aid as feedback, not a verdict
A novice putting study comparing auditory, visual, and control conditions found no clear retention or transfer advantage for the guidance groups and reported signs that performance could depend on the display. That study did not test these four methods, but it supports a sensible check: remove the guidance and observe again.
Use this sequence:
- Record the setup and geometry.
- Complete a small block with the method.
- Record visible outcomes only.
- Remove the aid without changing the start point or target.
- Complete a small retest.
- Record whether the pattern remained, changed, or became unclear.
Do not call a favorable practice block “learned” unless retention and transfer are actually examined—and even then, report the conditions and limitations.
Which method should you choose?
Choose the simplest safe method that answers your question:
- Want a long, narrow ball-path constraint? A straight strip or ruler may answer that, if it is flat and safe.
- Want a minimally constraining early checkpoint or finish zone? Flat markers may be enough.
- Want clear physical contact around the ball or putter on suitable turf? Tees can create either gate, but label which one.
- Want a repeatable manufactured opening or adjustment? A purpose-built gate may be relevant, but exact fit and product claims require physical evaluation.
If you cannot say what the method measures, do not make it harder. Return to the start-line versus pace distinction and the personal baseline.
What this comparison does not prove
